THE ORIGINAL STARBUCKS

Starbucks opened its first store in 1971 in the Pike Place Market in downtown Seattle. Because the Market is a historic district with design guidelines, the store retains its original look. The location that I was most excited about while vacationing in Seattle was the very first Starbucks store at Pike Place Market. As everyone knows, our family back in Manila are all Starbucks fan although the hubs prefers ???! Starbucks at the Power plant by day (Rockwell) and at Jupiter St. by the wee hours are considered our melting pots. Aside from the Space Needle and the location shootings of the movie Sleepless in Seattle, there was absolutely no way I was leaving the State without seeing the very first Starbucks store in person. It really indeed was a very special treat for me as I had always promised myself that one day when get to Seattle I would definitely visit the store that started it all.

First, thank you to SWAPP (Solid Waste Association of the Philippines) and their partners for initializing and spearheading this project Solid Waste Management in the 6 Barangays of Santa Ana.

As early as last year, series of meetings, seminars and the like were conducted as per invitation of this NGO (SWAPP). Starting April this year a more thorough and rigid activities including on-site tours/visits to model barangays and dumpsites were done. To be honest, I wasn’t that keen and interested because projects (it connotes expenses) usually proposed by NGOs are not included in the Barangay budget, meaning, NGO funds are limited to setting awareness such as orientation, tours and seminars only. What about the funds for its enforcement? Anyway, I salute the never ending effort and patience of our SWAPP volunteer Celia Dizon who didn’t give- up on my being “mataray” (scornful), “suplada” and indifferent at first. I’m sure the Lord answered her prayers to soften my heart……yeeehah! The prayers not only softened my heart but in the end, the full enforcement even made us her Model Barangay in implementing R.A. 9003 (The Solid Waste Management Act of 2003).

Expenses incurred from the construction of our MRF (Materials Recovery Facility), advertising and campaign posters and huge tarpaulines to the gears of our garbage collectors (Eco boys and girls) and all the other needs that called for financial requirements drained our budget. At this stage, I’m hoping for a hundred percent support from my constituents as we go along this worthy project we started last August 15, 2011, for a worthy cause towards a clean and well managed solid waste program.

Another community project will be spearheaded again by the Association of Senior Citizens of our Barangay. It will be another Bingo Socials which excites them most because of the prizes at stake. Among the major prizes are cash prizes, cellular phones and sony tvs. Minor prizes will include baskets of groceries and kitchen wares. Our target schedule is on the first week of November in time for my birthday. The Bingo Socials will be tagged as “Pabingo Alay Ni Chairman” (Bingo sponsored by the Chairman. Our family loves roadtrips and we had a lot of them during the recent summer. Solid Waste Management to be enforced soon

We’re almost ready to enforce R.A. 9003 “The Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000”.

As early as 2009, Solid Waste Management has been introduced specifically to the six (6) Barangays of Santa Ana through the efforts of the Solid waste management association of the Philippines (SWAPP). SWAPP is a non-profit membership organization composed of solid waste practitioners from Local Government Units, National Government Agencies, Non Government Organizations, and the Academe. Their mission is to build the capacity of LGUs, communities, and private sector to manage solid waste problems in their respective areas through research, trainings, technical assistance, information, exchanges, and network building.

However, from such time on many activities came up until last April this year when the ball started rolling again. Series of meetings, planning, workshops and study tours had been done so we can enforce the law. Thanks also to the mandamus from the Supreme Court to the deadline set for enforcement. Actual steps done in our Barangay:

A Committee on Solid Waste Management was formed.

Plans had been set-up on how to go about this project.

Education and Information Program to build community awareness through meetings set with the constituents of this Barangay, Memorandums and Letters of Memorandum.

An MRF (Material Recovery Facility) site has been built in front of JagPhil at New Panaderos.

A Barangay Ordinance was drafted and approved by the Barangay Council.

Full enforcement started August 15, 2011.

More than a Century Old piece of furniture called “Kupitre”

My husband Rey was one of his grandpa’s favorite “apo” (grandkid) and since the time we got married more than 30 years ago, he always tells fond memories of his “lolo” (grandpa). He even kept some memorabillas of him. A couple of weeks ago, I was strucked by this piece of furniture I saw in our garage being varnished by our stay-in carpenter and asked who owns it. He said it was Rey’s. Then I knew that it came from his uncle’s home who got it from their ancestral home in Cabiao, Nueva Ecija their hometown. Upon knowing that Rey wanted it, his uncle sent this “kupitre” to him. And as expected, he has a childhood story (with his lolo) to tell about this kupitre. He also said that according to his mom, before his grandpa was born in 1889, this was already in existence.

What’s so nice about this is that when Rey knew that I really wanted this, he told me it's mine. Wow!

When I read your column in a widely circulated tabloid through one of our helpers rushing to me and saying “Madam, madam basahin mo ito, ang kakapal daw ng mukha niyo!” (Read this Madam, it says you are all shameless and hard faced, I felt a slight of pity not for myself but for my fellow Chairmen. Of course I share the same feelings being one of them but on the contrary, I’m a little lucky since I’ve travelled numerous times and been to different places here and abroad, but how about the others? Can you not just consider this a priviledge for their hard work in their respective communities?

Why do you deprive people of their chance to travel especially those who don’t have the means? Don’t you know of the fact that travelling expands one’s horizon? How sad it is for leaders who are inexperienced about the diverse cultures of other people. Travelling broadens the mind - it gives you insight and understanding into other cultures which can only be a good thing. Seeing the world, meeting new people, learning about things you never knew existed, broadening your view of the world, bascially. Let them experience growth and real knowledge of the real world outside their nest. They have an allotted budget for this annual training and exposure though not as big as yours because you are in the top level position. Mind you, they’re also elected by a mandate of people just like you! You were also like them when you started in politics, rooted from the Barangayans. The only edge you have is that you were born from a very powerful clan with both politically and socially active parents (as well as siblings), what an easy way in. Lucky You!

Despite relentless efforts made to retrieve my then website mariegvergara.com, it was not recovered. Thanks to dear friend Beng’s help who backed-up the files and completely set up my new website marievergara.com. Not to forget the lady who inspired, introduced and initially taught me the wonders of blogging – that’s my everdearest cousin and BFF Girlie, thank you Cuz!.

It has been almost two months since I last had updates on my website. So many things and activities kept coming up, the addiction to FB games, the feeling of laziness/tiredness that struck me at the end of the day AND the fading out of the enthusiasm to write.

I'm not a coffee person just like my husband but a tea lover instead. I've tried several and among my favorites are jasmine and the milk tea publicly served to gamers at the Venetian Hotel in Macau! The year 2010 had been a good one for me and the rest of the family. There had been many happy and memorable occasions and events that happened during the year. Among them was the 50th birthday of my husband Rey, the 18th birthday of my youngest daughter Queenie and my 2nd term victory as re-elected Barangay Chairman of our community. <

Travels and trips here and abroad were also in abundance during the past year. I remembered I had three out of the country trips and a lot of local trips among them were the seminar in Cebu. Despite a few heartaches, pains, worries and stress, I can say I passed and survived with flying colors and I thanked the good Lord!

Now comes 2011 and still hopeful that this year will be a great one for me, my family, my friends and of course to my constituents and all the common people I offer my services to as a mere PUBLIC SERVANT.
